TCI values global environmental protection issues and trends. In addition to abiding by local environmental laws and regulations, TCI collaborates with its clients and suppliers to promote environmental management systems and green product management systems. The company also implements specific actions and measures for energy conservation and carbon reductions in the work environment to ensure the effective management and use of limited resources. The company has established its own environmental health and safety policies, and every year, the company conducts internal, external, and third-party audits to ensure its compliance with ISO 50001, ISO 14064, ISO 14001, and relevant environmental regulations.
TCI has established measures to ensure that it complies with factory pollution prevention and environmental regulations. The company conducts safety and health inspections based on its business model to both protect its employees and prevent air, water, and environmental contamination during the manufacturing process. TCI anticipates a reduction in waste emissions by 20%, energy consumption by 30%, and CO2 emissions by 20% by 2019.
In order to maintain the air quality and the safety of the employees in each factory, TCI plants are equipped with ventilated enclosures that operate around the clock. Operations that may produce odors must be performed in the enclosures to prevent the tests from influencing indoor air quality. The ventilation capacity of the enclosures is regularly tested by a specialized unit to ensure their functionality. In addition, waste gases discharged by the containers are collected in independent pipes and filtered through activated carbon before discharge. The filtration system is overseen and maintained by a specialized unit to ensure that the quality of the waste gases meets the quality standards. Additionally, all factories affiliated with TCI are equipped with central air-conditioning and energy-saving systems.
TCI's self-monitoring mechanisms and third-party organizations provide monitoring reports periodically. Noise levels are within regulatory standards in all office and factory environments, including the headquarters located in Neihu and the Panshi premises.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an intergovernmental body of the United Nations, has confirmed that climate change is mainly caused by greenhouse gas emissions and the impact not only brings environmental changes to the planet but also has an effect on daily life and economic activities of mankind. Clearly, management of carbon emissions and public disclosure of carbon emissions has become an important mission in corporate management. In response to international trends and domestic energy-saving policies, TCI has established short-term, medium-term and long-term work plans for the management of carbon dioxide emissions:
Short-term plan: Prepare the inventory of greenhouse gas emissions of TCI and obtain the ISO 14064-1 certification after the external inspection in 2016 — as the base year for the company's carbon dioxide emissions management and data construction (including the headquarters in Neihu and the branch office in the Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park).
Medium-term plan: Try to establish potential carbon reduction measures in day-to-day operations (including purchases of renewable energy certificates (RECs), installation of a great number of solar panels at factories, and cooperation with Sunnyfounder) and execute plans for the inventory of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) in accordance with client needs.
Long-term plan: Promote carbon reduction initiatives such as eco-design, clean production, and green factories based on the results of the inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and the inventory of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF).
To protect the environment and save energy, TCI has installed solar panels which produce 960 kW of electricity per day on the roofs of the plants at the Panshi Precision Intelligent Production Center in the Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park. 0.9 GWh of green power can be generated each year and CO2 emissions have been reduced by nearly 780,000 kg, equivalent to planting 60,000 trees. Furthermore, the amounts of nitrides, sulfides, and particulate matter emitted have also been decreased by 40,000 kg. Besides achieving energy savings and carbon reductions, this effort has also improved air quality, in line with TCI's vision of sustainable production.
In May 2017, TCI signed an agreement with the Forestry Bureau of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, Taiwan, to adopt 17.25 hectares of land for afforestation. The afforestation work was launched in July, 2017 and has reduced CO2 emissions by 225,720 kg so far.
TCI Co., Ltd. has the first ecological facial mask factory in the world, S11, which also obtained LEED Silver certification from U.S. Green Building Council.
The 5,959 tonnes of carbon emissions from TCI's S5 Panshi Functional Drink Factories, S9 Panshi Functional Food Factories, and S11 Panshi Eco Facial Mask Factory in the Panshi Precision Intelligent Production Center were offset and neutralized by buying carbon credits in compliance with the standards of Voluntary Emission Reductions (VERs) and the Gold Standard set forth in the Kyoto Protocol to achieve carbon neutrality and obtain the greenhouse gas reduction certificates.
